Systems Engineering
Program Objectives

 

 

1. SIE education objective 1 - Students should have the ability to model and solve problems using the techniques of mathematics, physics, engineering science, operations research, applied probability and statistics, and computer simulation.

Outcome 1 - The ability to apply natural and SIE engineering sciences to formulate an appropriate model.

Assessment Methods:
· Senior exit exam scores on short problem section;
· Employer survey, questions A and E.

Outcome 2 - The ability to determine and implement the appropriate modeling approach for problem solution.

Assessment Methods:
· Scores on exit exam, short problem section.
· Employer survey, question K

Outcome 3 -The ability to apply feedback to improve system performance and perform sensitivity analysis.

Assessment Methods:
· Scores on final exams in SIE 350, SIE 340, SIE 453;
· Capstone design project reports for projects requiring modeling.

 

2. SIE education objective 2 - Students should know and should have the ability to consider the entire system as a whole when solving problems, and not simply look at components and subsystems individually.

Outcome 1 - Students should understand all components in the design of large, complex systems from eliciting customer requirements through disposal.

Assessment Methods:
· Course grades in SIE 350 SIE 453 and SIE 454a;
· Senior exit exam - design;
· Employer survey, questions M and N.

Outcome 2 - The ability to model and analyze systems having conflicting criteria and interacting decision variables.

Assessment Methods:
· Course grades in Math 223, SIE 340;
· Capstone design reports;
· Employer survey, question C.

Outcome 3 - Understand the impact of the solution on society and the environment.

Assessment Methods:
· Employer survey, questions H;
· Course grade in SIE 495S.

 

3. SIE education objective 3 - Students should be effective team members. This includes teamwork skills as well as communication skills.

Outcome 1 - The students should understand roles, advantages, disadvantages and dynamics of teams and have successful experience on team projects.

Assessment Methods:

· SIE 260 team assessment report;
· Employer survey, question D;
· SIE 442 final project team log.

Outcome 2 -Students should be able to communicate effectively with team members and clients through both oral and written means.

Assessment Methods:
· Employer survey, questions G1 and G2;
· Instructor and self-analysis of presentations in SIE 442.

 

4. SIE education objective 4 - Students should be proficient at using modern computer tools to solve problems.

Outcome 1 - Students will be able to develop customized solution software.

Assessment Methods:
· Course grade in ENGR170, SIE 370, and SIE 411.

Outcome 2 - Students will know how to use high level modeling and computing tools such as spreadsheet programs, equation solvers, UML, and simulation software to analyze engineering problems.

Assessment Methods:

· Employer survey, question K.
· SIE 277 course grade;
· SIE 431 simulation language final modeling assignment.

 

5. SIE education objective 5 - Students should understand and appreciate professional behavior in engineering.

Outcome 1 - The students should be able to deal with clients (including instructors) in a professional manner covering demeanor, presentation style, and work ethic.

Assessment Methods:

· Client evaluation forms in SIE 442.
· Employer survey, question L.

Outcome 2 - The students should be able to understand different career options within the profession and preparation for life long learning.

Assessment Methods:

· Senior exit survey;
· Employer survey, question I;
· Completion of an SIE seminar;
· Alumni survey.

Outcome 3 - The students should be able to differentiate between ethical and unethical behavior.

Assessment Methods:

· Employer survey, question F;
· Completion of SIE 495S.
